Microfiction: The Same Sky

“Another one!” I shout, pointing at a blank space in the sky, once occupied by a shooting star. How wondrous our sky is, to make us feel so small and insignificant. I feel microscopic sitting under the same sky, watching the same stars mapped and worshipped by billions before me. The cold biting at my toes suddenly doesn’t feel so important anymore. “It’s overwhelming to think of how we all share the same sky. Everyone before and after us…ever.“ I look to my left to find them already looking back at me, and suddenly I’m more overwhelmed by the present.

We all share the same sky.

Author's Note: I  just wanted to be fun and make a super serious microfiction inspired by a tiktok but then it got deep?? I don't know what possessed me just now; I do not ever write love stories!! Anyway I don't know if anyone has seen those tiktoks where people "see what they would look like while stargazing," but I think it's funny how gen Z made it such a big thing when it's literally just your side profile! Tiktok works in mysterious ways, but you should also give yourself a pat on the back if you caught the DJ Khaled reference at the beginning!

  1. Hi SV! This was stunning. I definitely did not catch the DJ Khaled reference at the beginning, but that was because I was so entranced by what came after it! I don't do love stories either, but I think there is something so beautiful about acknowledging that love is such a powerful thing that it can compel even those who don't often acknowledge it to write lovely little stories that encompass it so wonderfully. Good job.

  2. Hi SV,

This is a wonderful micro-fiction. Naturally, this has also been something that I've been thinking about lately -- the interconnectedness of everything, whether it's in the past, the present, or even a hundred years from now. It really does remind us of how small we are, but it also makes us aware of the ongoing lives of everyone and everything around us right? Everyone is going through their own struggles, their own happiness -- but somehow, we all look at the same sky at the end of the day. It's a beautiful, but somewhat daunting thought of the interconnectedness of the people around us, I feel like. Anyways, wonderful story and I look forward to reading more from you!

  3. Hi SV,
I love your microfiction . The six words drabbles said it all, we might be all different and going through our own struggle and happiness but at the end of the day, we are all under the same sky. I also like the shout out like DJ Khaled says "Another one". Overall great job. I am looking forward reading more of your microfictions.

  4. Hi SV!

I love the inspiration you took for this story because it's so creative! I probably would have never considered writing a story based from a Tiktok so it was very clever. The story also turned out so well! The only thing that confused me was the "them" at nearly the end when the narrator looks to their left. It's a little confusing because it suggests multiple people are looking back at our narrator. To clarify it a little bit, I would commit to either gender, a "he" or "she" to make it a little more understandable. Anyways, this was a very good read for me. Good work!

  5. Hey SV! I think your micro fiction was incredibly impactful. I'm always so impressed by micro fiction stories, as they hold so much power with such little context. I think your story in particular did a great job of giving the reader the opportunity to come up with a specific scenario in their mind to apply the micro fiction to while also giving them structure and guidance of what their imagination should look like. Great job this week!
